| Incoming: Battlefield 3 update! |
| The DICE team are hard at work supporting Battlefield 3. To date, we have implemented several server updates to improve stability and performance. Next week we are publishing a significant Battlefield 3 client update for the PC. Console patches take a bit longer due to the certification requirements for console content, but it will follow shortly after the PC update. So what’s in the PC patch? You’ll see improved polish, stability, weapons balancing, squad control functionality, user interface enhancements, and several feature enhancements that address feedback the community has provided to date – plus we’re removing the so called “negative mouse acceleration” that some of you have experienced. Regarding cheating and boosting, we continue to analyze data to identify and hold accountable (ban, wipe stats) players that cheat or boost. We’ve received questions about what to do when faced with unsportsmanlike conduct in Battlefield 3 – the best course of action is to click the warning sign next to their profile name in Battlelog, or head to the EA Help Desk and report your issue. These leads will enable us to follow up on the report. We appreciate all the feedback. Keep it coming to help us with future improvements. Check back next week to confirm the patch launch date and the detailed fix list. Thanks for playing and sharing your feedback with us! | No Call of Duty Elite for Modern Warfare 3 PC Launch |
| From Click Here Developer Beachhead Studios has confirmed that Call of Duty Elite will not be ready for the PC launch of Modern Warfare 3. The Call of Duty Elite program provides premium content and rewards to subscribers, but Beachhead says the program needs more security than the console versions in order to run on PC. "We're as committed as ever to the PC, but the need to ensure a safe PC environment is greater than ever," studio head Chacko Sonny told Activision's Dan Amrich. "It's really extensive. We need more time to get there, so Elite on PC will not launch on Day 1. We're working our butts off to make it happen, but we won't release it until we know that PC gamers can enjoy Elite as it's meant to be." Sonny is concerned that potential vulnerabilities could allow gamers to cheat the system in order to earn Elite's bonuses and rewards. "The issue here is that the PC is an insecure platform," he said. "Without a central, trusted resource for stats, a lot of our competition features become unfair. We can't give away prizes when people can easily cheat their stats. Leaderboards are less fun when a lot of the users are there unfairly." "Not being able to trust stats is a big problem for our design," added product director Noah Heller. "Because of this, we had to re-imagine Elite for PC. Elite for PC will be about access to your own stats, or those of your friends. Basically establishing a circle of trust. And because it will have some reduced functionality, it will be free for everyone." Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released on November 8th. |
| Patrick Soderlund Talks Battlefield 3 |
| From Click Here Following huge pre-order numbers, Battlefield 3 launched last week to positive reviews. Yesterday, we learned that the game sold five million copies worldwide during its first week in stores, and that early online problems are being addressed. In the wake of the game's launch, Electronic Arts executive vice president Patrick Soderlund spoke to us about what comes next for Battlefield 3, including its competition against Call of Duty later this month. "We have had a fantastic first week where we sold five million units around the world. That means that this is the fastest selling game in the history of EA. I find that to be pretty impressive," Soderlund told us. "Having been a part of building that feels pretty good. This is obviously driven by our fans and the good reception that the game has gotten over the world. It's just almost gone bigger than we anticipated. It's great, obviously, but it's been a daunting week." One of the most impressive aspects of the game's launch is its international appeal. The game has spread to several continents and according to Soderlund, that's one of the achievements the team is the most proud of. "Clearly it's really cool how widespread the user volume is. It's all over the world. It's people from Tokyo to LA to Sydney to Stockholm to London to everywhere," he said. "People are playing this thing, and just to see pictures and photos of game stores' humungous lines waiting and lining up to buy the game, that just feels great, to be honest. And so we're very humbled by that, clearly, and appreciative of the support that we've gotten from our fans all over the world, and that's great." Beyond worldwide appeal, Soderlund is also happy to see a different audience coming to Battlefield. While longtime fans of the franchise are certainly still interested, the game has also spread to a more mainstream audience, which was one of DICE's goals. "The fact that we're seeing a lot of new Battlefield players come into the franchise means a lot to me," Soderlund said. "That's been something that I've been trying to push on for a long time, that we wanted to go wider, become a broader, established IP, and it seems like that's really working for us, so that's cool."
